10 Things to Do near Wits

by Francesca Matthys

FundiConnect ambassador Francesca gives the low-down on 10 zesty things to do nearย Wits. If you’re staying in Joburg, check this out.ย

Studying at Wits comes with a lot of perks that go beyond receiving a good and thought-provoking education. When it comes to recreational activities, the areas in close proximity of the University of Witwatersrand are jam-packed with exciting things to do. Most of which, Iโ€™d say, should definitely spice up your next date night, time out with the girls, family day or just any moment that calls for an activity with spunk.

  • The Sheds @ 1 Fox Street

Markets have quickly become a trend and The Sheds is no different. This rustic market on the outskirts of Newtown is a genuine treat. The market accommodates a variety of food stands, food bars, design, fashion and craft stalls which are open at different times from Tuesday to Sunday. The entire market however is open from Friday to Saturday. If youโ€™re in the mood for a scrumptious Lebanese wrap, a decadent waffle, a refreshing bubble tea beverage or even just some live music โ€“ The Sheds is the place for you. The market is extremely laid back and ideal for some weekend downtime.

  • Newtown Junction/ Market Theatre

This recently opened shopping mall situated in the heart of Newton is full of shops and restaurants to keep you intrigued. Youโ€™ll find tasty fast food shops, a bakery and more stylish restaurants. With a total of about 20 options youโ€™re bound to find something that excites your palate. The precinct is also home to numerous clothing stores that (as clichรฉ as it may sound) could possibly make you shop till you drop.

As a bonus, Newtown Junction is located adjacent to The Market Theatre. Itโ€™s the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. The Market Theatre โ€“ home of only the best of live performance houses three theatres. As a theatre lover I can definitely say that the market theatre only showcases the best.
