Career Overview

Bookkeeping entails the process of keeping record of any finances whether it be of a business or individual. Through the process of bookkeeping the Bookkeeper keeps track of all income and expenditure to maintain a budget.

The role of a Bookkeeper comes with great responsibility, though can also allow for personal growth for the individual. As a Bookkeeper, you can also enhance yourself further by continuing your studies and receiving further qualifications in courses like accounting and possibly being offered more senior positions in their company.

Required School Subjects

You will need to have taken the following subjects at high school:

  • English (Home Language or First Additional Language)

Recommended subjects:

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Accounting
  • Business Studies

Institution and APS

Not all employers require a formal qualification however there are certain Bookkeeping diplomas that can be obtained at various institutions such as:

  • Damelin – No specific APS required
  • Milpark Education – No specific APS required
  • University of Cape Town (UCT) – Faculty Point Score (FPS) of 480 for guranteed entrance
  • Rosebank College – No specific APS required
  • University of South Africa (UNISA) – APS of 17

Required Qualification/s

In order to work as a Bookkeeper, you don’t necessarily need a formal qualification.  However, this can go a long way in finding employment.  Some of the most suitable qualifications include a Diploma or a Bachelor of Commerce specialising in accounting.

Where you can work

A Bookkeeper can be employed by a different organisations or company’s and work on a fulltime basis, alternatively they can be outsourced as a freelance consultant.  

Working Hours

Hours may often follow a usual 9am – 5pm working day, depending on each organisation.

Expected Salary

An average Bookkeeper salary can be around R154 490 per year and can fluctuate and increase in the first five years of experience.

What to expect

This career choice will be mentally strenuous and require intense focus and the ability to be as accurate as possible. It may be quite an isolated job but can be rewarding in the end.
