How to Access Your myUnisa Account
If you're studying through the University of South Africa (Unisa), myUnisa is where your entire student life lives. Study material, assignments, exam results, your official student email, module announcements — all of it is managed through this platform.
Getting in for the first time can feel confusing if you don't know what you're looking for. This guide walks you through everything: how to claim your login for the first time, how to access myUnisa and myLife, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Understanding the Unisa Digital Ecosystem
Before diving into the login steps, it helps to understand the three platforms Unisa uses — because they're connected but not identical.
myUnisa is your main student portal at my.unisa.ac.za. From here you access your modules, submit assignments, check results, update your personal details and manage your registration. Think of it as your academic home base.
myLife is your official Unisa student email address, in the format studentnumber@mylife.unisa.ac.za. Unisa uses this address for all official communication — exam timetables, registration confirmations, academic correspondence. It's the only email address Unisa recognises for official communication. Your myLife password is the same as your myUnisa password.
myModules (which runs on Moodle) is where your actual course content lives — study guides, discussion forums, assignment submissions and digital learning materials. You access it through myUnisa. Some modules also use myExams for online assessments, which requires the same login.
All three platforms use the same student number and password.
Step 1: Claim Your Unisa Login (First-Time Students Only)
If you've just been registered at Unisa for the first time, you won't have a password yet. You need to claim your login before you can access anything.
Go to the Claim UNISA Login page on the Unisa website. You'll need your student number, which Unisa assigned when your registration was processed. Follow the prompts, verify your identity using your SA ID or passport number, and set a password.
A few things to know at this stage:
Your myLife email account can take up to 24 hours to activate after you claim your login. Don't panic if it doesn't work immediately — log back in the next day.
The password you set here applies to both myUnisa and myLife. They share one password across both systems.
If the activation link sent to your email expires before you click it, it's because Unisa's activation links are only valid for 24 hours. If yours has expired, go back to the Claim UNISA Login page and request a new one.
Step 2: Log Into myUnisa
Once you've claimed your login and your account is active, logging in is straightforward.
Go to my.unisa.ac.za
Enter your student number as your username
Enter your myUnisa password
Click Login
You'll land on your myUnisa dashboard, which gives you access to myAdmin (for administrative tasks), your modules, announcements and all other student services.
Alternatively, you can go directly to unisa.ac.za and click the myUnisa login link from the homepage.
Step 3: Access Your myLife Email
Your myLife email is separate from the myUnisa portal, even though they share the same password. To access it:
Go to outlook.office.com
Enter your full myLife email address: studentnumber@mylife.unisa.ac.za
Enter your myUnisa password
Click Sign in
Because myLife runs on Microsoft's platform, you may be prompted to verify your identity through Microsoft's multi-factor authentication. Follow the prompts to complete the sign-in.
If you've recently reset your myUnisa password, allow up to 30 minutes for the new password to sync across to myLife. If it still doesn't work after that, email MyLifeHelp@unisa.ac.za for assistance.
Step 4: Access Your Modules (myModules)
Once you're logged into myUnisa, you can access your individual course modules through myModules. From your myUnisa dashboard:
Click on myModules in the navigation menu
You'll be taken to the Moodle-based learning platform
Your registered modules will appear on the dashboard
From each module page you can access study guides, download resources, participate in discussion forums, and submit assignments. Your assignment submission tab will show all upcoming and past assignments with their due dates.
If a module doesn't appear in your myModules dashboard, check that your registration for that module is confirmed. Unregistered modules won't show up, even if you've already paid.
What You Can Do Inside myUnisa
Once you're in, here's what myUnisa gives you access to:
myAdmin lets you handle all administrative tasks in one place: viewing and updating your biographical details, checking your financial account, tracking your study material parcel delivery, changing your password, and editing your module registration.
Assignments lets you view, download and submit all assignments for all your registered modules. Submission deadlines are clearly shown, and you can track whether your submission has been received.
Exam results are accessible through myUnisa once released — typically four to six weeks after the exam date. You can also access your full academic record through myAdmin.
Exam timetables are published on myUnisa and updated each semester. You can also access the myExams portal directly to navigate to your specific exam on the day.
Discussion forums in myModules let you engage with fellow students and e-tutors. For distance learning students, this is often the closest thing to a classroom community.
Library access is also available through myUnisa, giving you access to digital journals, databases and research resources as a registered student.
Forgotten Password: How to Reset It
If you can't log in and see an "Invalid Credentials" error, your password may be wrong or may need to be reset. Here's how to do it:
Go to my.unisa.ac.za
Click "Forgotten Unisa Password" on the login page
Enter your student number and click Continue
Fill in your surname, full names, date of birth and either your South African ID number or passport number — these must match exactly what you submitted when you registered
Verify the last four digits of your registered cellphone number
Follow the prompts to set a new password

The new password will apply to both myUnisa and myLife. Remember to allow up to 30 minutes for the change to sync across to your myLife email account.
If you can't complete the password reset because your details don't match what's on Unisa's system — for example, if your registered phone number has changed — contact the myUnisa Support Centre at myUnisaHelp@unisa.ac.za and include your student number and a description of the issue.
Common Login Problems and What to Do
"Invalid Credentials" error This usually means your password is wrong. Use the Forgotten Unisa Password option to reset it. Don't keep guessing — repeated failed attempts can temporarily lock your account.
myLife email not working after claiming your login myLife can take up to 24 hours to activate after you claim your Unisa login for the first time. Wait and try again the following day. If it's been longer than 24 hours, email MyLifeHelp@unisa.ac.za.
myUnisa is slow or unresponsive This is a known issue during peak periods — particularly in January during registration, and around assignment due dates when thousands of students are logging in simultaneously. If the portal is slow, try again during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening), or use a different browser. Clearing your cache or using incognito mode can also help.
Modules not showing in myModules Check your registration status in myAdmin. If a module isn't showing, your registration for it may not be confirmed. Contact Unisa's student enquiries via study-info@unisa.ac.za if your registration looks correct but the module still isn't appearing.
Password reset email going to an old number If your registered cellphone number has changed, you won't be able to complete the self-service password reset. In this case, contact myUnisaHelp@unisa.ac.za directly with your student number and identity document.

What is my myUnisa username? Your username is your eight-digit Unisa student number. This is the number assigned to you when your registration was processed. You'll find it on your registration confirmation, fee statement or any official Unisa correspondence.
What if I don't know my student number? Check your original registration documents or any previous emails from Unisa. Without your student number, you can't reset your password or access any Unisa system. If you genuinely can't find it, contact study-info@unisa.ac.za with your full name and ID number.
