Documents You Need to Apply to UMP

Have these ready as electronic copies before you start, because you'll upload them during the application:

• A certified copy of your ID document

• A certified copy of your latest results (your Senior Certificate or NSC if you've already finished school, or your latest school report if you're in matric now)

• Any other relevant documents, such as academic records from another institution

• Proof of payment of the R200 application fee (if you're not paying online during the application)

UMP accepts PDF, DOC, DOCX, TIFF, PNG, JPG and JPEG files.

Tip: scan, don't snap. A clear scan (or a free scanner app on your phone) is much easier to read than a blurry photo. Unclear documents can delay your application.

Application fees by applicant type (non-refundable):

• South African applicants: R200

• SADC applicants: R400

• International applicants (outside SADC): R550

If you pay by deposit or EFT, use your ID number or student number as the reference so UMP can match the payment to you.

How to Apply to UMP Online: Step by Step

UMP applications are done online through the university's iEnabler system. Set aside about an hour, and make sure your documents are scanned and ready.

1. Open the application portal. Go to UMP's Online Applications page and follow the link to start a new application.

2. Enter your basic details and save. Fill in your biographical information.

3. Create your PIN and note your student number. You'll create a 5-digit PIN, then change it. Write down the student number that appears on screen. You'll need it to log in and to check your status later.

4. Accept the POPI Act notice and the application rules.

5. Select "Student Application".

6. Complete your personal details. Update your biographical information, then add your address details (next of kin, account, postal and physical addresses) and your contact details (cellphone number and email address).

7. Record any disability, or select "No Disability".

8. Enter your matric subjects and marks. Capture your school-leaving subjects and your latest results.

9. Add any previous studies if you've studied at another institution before.

10. Upload your documents.

11. Choose your programmes. Under "Add new academic applications", choose up to two programmes.

12. Apply for residence (optional). If you want to stay in a UMP residence, click "Add New Residence Application".

13. Pay the application fee. You can pay online under the Academic Application section by clicking "Make Payment", or upload your proof of payment.

14. Check that your application shows 100% progress. If it doesn't, something is missing, so go back and complete it.

Choose your two programmes wisely. Make your first choice the course you really want, and your second a realistic backup you also meet the requirements for. This gives you a better chance of getting an offer.

What Happens After You Apply

Once your application shows 100%, the waiting game begins. Here's what to do in the meantime:

• Keep your student number and PIN safe. You'll use them to log in to iEnabler and check your application status.

• Check your email and SMSes regularly. UMP will contact you using the details you gave, so make sure they're correct.

• Send your final results once they're out. If you applied with your Grade 11 or June results, your offer depends on your final NSC results.

• Apply for funding now, not after you're accepted (see the next section).

Residence at UMP

You apply for residence as part of your online application (step 12 above). UMP's on-campus accommodation includes single and double-sharing rooms with uncapped Wi-Fi, dining halls and shared study areas, plus rooms for students living with disabilities. Space is limited, so apply for residence when you apply for your programme. If you don't get a room on campus, UMP also lists accredited private accommodation.

How to Fund Your Studies at UMP

Getting accepted is one thing; paying for your studies is another. The good news is there are several ways to fund your studies at UMP, and you can start applying now.

NSFAS

If your household earns R350,000 or less a year, you may qualify for NSFAS funding, which can cover tuition, accommodation and allowances. UMP bursaries and other funders

UMP offers its own bursaries, including the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for undergraduates with strong academic records, leadership and community involvement. It covers tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks and a laptop. UMP's Student Funding page also lists external funders, such as SETAs, municipalities and foundations. Each funder sets its own criteria and closing dates, so check their websites.

Tips for a Successful UMP Application

Apply before matric exams get busy. The undergraduate deadline is 30 November 2026, while you're still writing exams. Get it done early so it isn't one more thing to stress about.

Check each programme's requirements. Look at the APS and subject levels on the page for the course you want, and make sure your second choice is one you also qualify for.

Double-check your details. A typo in your email address or cellphone number could mean you miss important messages from UMP.

Apply to more than one institution. Spaces are limited, so it's smart to apply to a few universities or colleges to keep your options open.

Only use official channels. Apply through UMP's website, pay only into official UMP channels, and never pay anyone who promises to "guarantee" you a place.

How much is the UMP application fee?
