2023 South African School Calendar: Public School
The South African school calendar for the year 2023 has officially been released for public schools.
The Department of Education has summed up the 2023 school year as follows:
- 43 weeks
- 207 (211) days
- 6+2 public holidays
- 199 (203) school days
Although 43 weeks sounds like a ton of time to prepare for tests and exams, it’s easy to get comfortable. And quite frankly, it’s only a matter of time before “I’ll do it later” turns into a full-blown stream of panic and late-night cramming.
To make sure you’re able to plan for the upcoming school year, let’s see how the public school calendar looks in 2023:

Tips on How to Plan for the 2023 School Year
Now that you’ve got a better idea of how the 2023 South African school calendar is going to look, be sure to make use of our top tips on how to plan for this year:
- Get a South African calendar: This may sound redundant, but make your own makeshift school calendar and write down all the important dates. You’ll need to include when the terms start when they end when the school breaks are as well as any public holidays and breaks. Once the school year starts, you’ll be able to add any cycle tests, projects, or assignments to help you stay on track.
- Keep your calendar in front of you: Put your school calendar in a place where you’ll always be able to see it. That way, you’ll constantly be reminded of what’s ahead, whether it’s a test coming up or a public holiday to look forward to.
- Use a time management app: If paper isn’t your thing (or you can’t buy a calendar), there are tons of apps you can use that let you manage your time. Whether you want to track your homework or set up to-do lists, download one of these apps to help you stay on track with all your assignments and sporting activities.
- Start your assignments early: Mark that due date down on your school calendar and be sure to set aside 30 minutes to work on it each day. That way, by the time it’s actually due, you’ve already finished most of it, meaning you can use your spare time to give it a once-over to make sure you’ve done the best you can do.
- Take care of yourself: Time management is hard when you’re not taking care of yourself. Be sure to get enough sleep at night and make sure you’re taking breaks
