2027 South African School Calendar
The 2027 school year is around the corner, and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has already published the official calendar for public schools. Whether you're a learner, a parent or a teacher, here's everything you need to plan your year.
Quick answer: public schools open on Wednesday, 13 January 2027 and close on Wednesday, 8 December 2027. The year has four terms:
Term 1: 13 January to 19 March
Term 2: 6 April to 25 June
Term 3: 20 July to 22 September
Term 4: 5 October to 8 December
Last updated: 5 November 2026. All term dates and holidays come from the DBE's official 2027 Calendar for Public Schools, published in Government Gazette No. 52178 on 25 February 2025.
2027 School Calendar for Public Schools
The DBE's 2027 calendar gives one set of dates for all public schools, so inland and coastal schools open and close on the same days.
Term | Opens | Closes | Weeks | School days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Term 1 | Wednesday, 13 January | Friday, 19 March | 10 | 48 |
Term 2 | Tuesday, 6 April | Friday, 25 June | 12 | 56 |
Term 3 | Tuesday, 20 July | Wednesday, 22 September | 10 | 46 |
Term 4 | Tuesday, 5 October | Wednesday, 8 December | 10 | 47 |
Total | 42 | 197 |
The school days above are for learners, after public holidays have been taken off. Teachers work a few extra days: according to the Western Cape Education Department's 2027 School Planning Calendar, teachers start Term 1 on Monday, 11 January and finish Term 4 on Friday, 10 December, giving them 201 school days.
2027 school holidays

Applying to study in 2028?
If you're in matric in 2027, the year is also about planning what comes next:
University applications: most universities open applications for the following year between April and June, and many close between August and the end of September. Check our university application dates page for each university's window.
NSFAS: NSFAS's 2027 applications closed on 31 October 2026, so expect the 2028 window to open in the second half of 2027.
Bursaries: many bursaries close mid-year, long before results come out. See our list of bursaries for 2027 to see how they work.
Exam prep: use the school holidays to work through matric past papers by subject.
How to Plan Your 2027 School Year
Put the term dates in your calendar now. Add the opening and closing dates, plus the four-day weekend in April, to your phone or a family calendar.
Plan around Term 2. At 12 weeks, it's the longest term of the year, and it's when most schools write mid-year exams. Build in time to rest over the June holidays.
Budget for the start of the year. January brings school fees, uniforms and stationery all at once, so start saving in the holidays.
Matrics, use the holidays wisely. The winter and spring holidays fall just before the trial and final exams. A little revision every day goes a long way.
Check your school's own calendar. Schools add their own dates, like sports days, parent meetings and internal exams, so ask for the school's 2027 calendar in January.
