NSFAS won't reopen in January. EMC has warned that NSFAS applications for 2027 close on 31 October 2026 and won't reopen in January 2027. If you need funding, apply for NSFAS at the same time as you apply to EMC.

Before You Apply: Choose Your Course and Campus
Start with the free career assessment. EMC recommends that you complete its free online career guidance assessment before you apply. Register with your name and ID number and answer the questionnaire. Your results help you choose between Business, Engineering and Occupational Studies.
Know the three types of qualifications
NC(V) (National Certificate Vocational), Levels 2 to 4: a three-year programme (one level a year) that mixes theory and practical work. A good option if you want a practical, career-focused qualification instead of, or after, matric.
Report 191 (N4 to N6): Business Studies programmes run in six-month semesters, and Engineering Studies in roughly 10-week blocks. After N6, you can earn a National N Diploma with the required work experience.
Occupational programmes: work-focused qualifications such as Electrician, Welding, Automotive Motor Mechanic, Early Childhood Development Practitioner and Bookkeeping.
Check the entry requirements
NC(V) Level 2: a Grade 11 or Grade 12 year-end report, an NQF Level 1 qualification, an approved bridging programme, or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Grade 9 and 10 learners are only considered in exceptional cases.
Report 191 Business Studies (N4 to N6): Grade 12 (NSC).
Report 191 Engineering Studies: depends on the level. Each level needs the one below it, for example N4 needs N3.
Occupational programmes: requirements differ per programme, so ask the campus that offers it.
Check which campus offers your course. EMC has nine campuses in Kariega (Uitenhage), Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Graaff-Reinet, and not every course is offered at every campus. Documents You Need
EMC's online application asks you to upload your documents as PDFs, so scan them before you start. Have these ready:
A certified copy of your ID
Your latest school results (your Grade 9, 11 or 12 report, or your matric certificate)
Proof of residence
A working email address and cellphone number
If you're also applying for NSFAS, you'll need a certified copy of your next of kin's ID (or your parents' or guardian's IDs) and, where it applies, proof of household income. Certified copies should be no older than three months.
Tip: a free scanner app on your phone can turn photos into clear PDFs. Blurry or cut-off documents can hold up your application.
How to Apply to EMC Online: Step by Step
Complete the career assessment (recommended). Do the free career guidance assessment so you know which course suits you.
Register on the application portal. Go to the EMC application portal, register and accept the terms and conditions.
Complete your student profile. Fill in all three parts of your profile, create a password, and enter your latest results as percentages.
Start a new application. Log in, open your Dashboard and go to Current Applications. Choose the year (2027), your course, the course duration and your campus, then click "Apply for this course" and accept the disclaimer.
Select your subjects. Tick all the subjects for your course and confirm.
Complete every section. Each section must show a green tick. A red section means something is missing.
Upload your documents. Click "Docs" in the same row and upload your documents as PDFs.
Save your login details. You'll need them to check your application status.

Watch out for scams. Only apply through EMC's official portal, and never pay anyone who offers to apply on your behalf.
After You Apply
Check your status regularly. Log in to the EMC application portal with your saved details to see where your application stands.
Make sure every section has a green tick. If any section is red, your application isn't complete, so log back in and fix it before 31 October.
Keep your phone and email close. EMC will contact you using the details on your profile.
Plan for registration. Places on many courses are limited by Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) enrolment targets, so if you're accepted, register as soon as registration opens. Check EMC's Facebook page and website for 2027 registration dates.
How to Fund Your Studies at EMC
NSFAS (the DHET TVET Colleges Bursary Scheme)
EMC students can be funded through the DHET TVET Colleges Bursary Scheme, which NSFAS administers. According to EMC's bursary scheme page, it's for South African citizens registered at EMC, and it's awarded based on:

academic performance
at least 80% class attendance
