2020 INSTITUTION APPLICATION DATES
If you would like to study in 2020, you need to know the institution application dates. From there, you can start the application process. Exciting times!
First things first
It’s important to note from the start that institutions such as the University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Stellenbosch (US), University of Western Cape (UWC), University of South Africa (Unisa), University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Nelson Mandela University (NMU) are officially closed for applications to study in 2019.
But, if you’re thinking: “Soooo, there’s nowhere left to study in 2019?”, well, we’ve got good news for you!
Late Applications are a Thing
If you’re eager to study next year – be it fresh from high school or after a year of globe-trotting – and feel as if you’ve left it too late, you haven’t! How are you going to figure out where to study in 2019? You guessed it – right here and right now!
Although some of the “big” institutions have shut the door on applications for 2019, there are plenty more options out there for you!
Let’s dive straight into those options:
Public Institutions
Wits
The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) is the only university in South Africa that is still open for late applications.
This is for short courses and the applications close on December 14th.
The short courses offered by Wits present you with the perfect opportunity if you still want to apply to study in 2019. These short courses are a year in length so at the end of 2019 you will find yourself up skilled and enriched with knowledge.

Private Colleges
eta College
eta is still accepting applications for 2019. This is a private college that specializes in qualifications that will result in you being employed in the sport and fitness world. Are you a ‘gym bunny’? If so, you could spend 2019 getting a qualification AND working out at the same time! There couldn’t be better news, could there? Oh yes! eta has campuses across the country!
For those who want to take a one-year course in 2019, here are some options that eta offers:
- Advanced certificate in fitness: sport conditioning
- Higher Certificate in fitness
- Personal trainer certificate
And for those that can’t make it to a campus, eta offers an online ‘National certificate in sport management’ course.
City Varsity
City Varsity is another institution that is still accepting applications. This could be an option for you if you are interested in media: videography, photography, writing, or graphic design.
With campuses in Cape Town and Johannesburg, City Varsity offers a variety of short courses.

TVET Colleges
Your last opportunity to study in 2019 comes in the form of TVET Colleges.
Lovedale TVET College
Lovedale TVET College offers a variety of courses across its three campuses. A few examples of their courses include Electrical, Plumbing, Farming Management, Information Technology and Computer Sciences as well as Business Management. Lovedale is still open for applications (woohoo!) and closes in the second week of January 2019.
Tshwane North TVET College
Tshwane North TVET College in Pretoria is still open and will be open throughout 2019 for applications to study. Much like Lovedale TVET College, Tshwane North offers a variety of courses to meet your interests.
