[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We caught up with Melissa Rhoode, a Speech Therapist graduate from UCT. She tells us why she chose UCT, how to make the best of your time there and some advice to future and current UCT students.
Settle in and read ahead to gain some insight to what you life at UCT might look like and how to optimise your time there, to make it memories you’ll never forget.
- Why did you decide to attend UCT and what campus were you on?
UCT is one of the top tertiary institutions in the world. It is also one of the two universities in Cape Town with Speech Therapy as a course (the other being Stellenbosch University)
- What is your impression of UCT overall in regards to
- Social life– UCT has many sport and cultural options to help students interact socially. There is also the RAG committee who organizes exciting functions.
- Quality of education – students are provided with the latest researched information, keeping education up to date. UCT has a massive library and many computer labs making access to information easier.
- Fellow students – students are a mixture of personalities and cultures from all over the country.
- Location- the campus is situated in a place that is accessible. Rosebank station is just across the road from the Lower Campus. There is a shuttle service that runs from Claremont, Rondebosch, Newlands, Mowbry, Observatory (Health science faculty) and Cape Town CBD to the campus. This is free of charge if you have your student ID card, making traveling for students safe and economical.
- Lecturers – most of the lecturers at UCT are “the cream of the crop” if you will. All have Master’s or PhD Degrees in their field of expertise. They are trained to teach in a way that assists students as best as possible. Particularly lecturers at Health science are student centred and always go the extra mile to assist learning.
- Would you recommend that someone else goes to UCT and if so any special reason not already mentioned.
I would strongly recommend it. It is a great opportunity not only to learn at a fine institution but also to holistically mold yourself into the individual you want to be.

If you find yourself in a financial situation where you can’t afford to study at UCT, there is Financial Assistance Scheme that is provided namely the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. They pay for your studies for up to 5-6years. Bursaries are awarded during these years, which reduces your total loan in the end. Once you start working, you would then pay back your loan at a comfortable rate per month.
