Five Ways to Maximise Your Break

Whether you’re in matric or grade 9, you can make your school holidays work for you.  While your peers aren’t giving two thoughts to next term, you can be different. You’re going to be – what’s that word? – productive. Before you roll your eyes, use them to read on.  You might be surprised by how easy and rewarding ‘productivity’ can be. We’ve got you covered – take a look at some of the tips and tricks you can use to make the most out of your break.

Here are five ways to make the most out of these weeks you aren’t in the classroom:

  1. Reflect on the term gone by
What did you do well in? What needs work? What could you do differently?
  2. Set goals for the upcoming term
Having a clear picture of where you want to go will enable you to set appropriate goals instead of just winging it. To aid your vision, set performance goals and process goals: what you want to do and how you’re going to do it. For example, if you want to get an A for maths, commit to doing extra maths lessons or extra maths tasks for homework.
  3. Get a job
What’s holiday time without some extra ching? You can’t possibly spend all your time thinking about school, so you’re going to need some cash to enjoy yourself too. This way you also learn the value of money and how to manage it. Because, let’s face it, we’re a lot slower to part with our own hard earned cash as opposed to mom or dad’s.
  4. Get fit
A healthy body goes hand in hand with a healthy mind. Get outdoors, with a few friends and go hiking. Or surfing (FYI: the swell is best in winter). Or even just cycling down the promenade (for those of you in a coastal city). When you feel good, your self-confidence grows and you’re also able to focus better on tasks at hand.
  5. Visit potential colleges or universities
If you’re in matric, now is a good time to seriously think about your future. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Start researching and visiting potential tertiary options. The more time you give yourself to make a choice, the less pressure you’ll feel.

Holiday Time: It’s All About the Balance

Varsity students, y’all aren’t off the hook here. Just because you’re in university and actively moving towards your dream job, doesn’t mean you can rest on your laurels. A good life is all about balance. So whether you’re in high school or university, there is always an opportunity to improve. Here are some more ways to make the most out of your school holidays:

  1. Speak to adults around you about career options – you may have an idea of what you want to do with your degree, but perhaps there are some things you haven’t thought of. It’s also a good idea to join an online community that pertains to your particular field and gets in on some discussions.
  2. Create a personal website – your chances of getting that dream job can be increased if you have a website or blog surrounding your particular career. It shows passion, creativity, and commitment.
  3. Get a mentor – a good mentor will make you self-aware and help you make better decisions as well as achieve long-term success.
  4. Increase your writing skills – whether it’s texting, emailing or writing essays and reports, being able to write well is a valuable skill in good communication.
  5. Read – self-help books will get you a lot farther than cheesy romance novels – though those are great too! Why not try one of these books?
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People – Dale Carnegie
  • The Art of Extreme Self-Care – Cheryl Richardson
  • The Success Principles – Jack Canfield

As young humans – or just any humans – we always have the potential for growth. You have no better time than when you’re on downtime from a hectic study schedule. Fact.  Make some time to chill, but keep those goals in mind to ensure you’re the best you that you can be! A goal without a plan is just a wish, after all.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
