Tuition Fees & Cost Structure 2026

NWU’s fee structure varies by program and qualification level. All prospective students receive a detailed fee quotation upon acceptance. Undergraduate tuition fees are competitive and vary based on field of study.

International students: Application fee R600 (non-refundable); must pay full tuition in advance before registration. South African applicants: Free application.

Admission Requirements & Entry Criteria

South African Applicants must possess a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent, with an Admission Points Score (APS) calculated from their six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. Many programs require specific subject prerequisites and minimum achievement marks.

International Applicants must provide: SAQA evaluation of academic credentials, certified copy of passport, official academic records, and proof of English language proficiency (if applicable).

Programs in health sciences, nursing, music, and graphic design have more competitive selection processes with earlier closing dates and additional entrance assessments or portfolios.

NWU's Three Campuses

NWU operates across three strategically located campuses. Potchefstroom Campus is the flagship and largest campus, specializing in engineering, health sciences, natural sciences, and professional qualifications with the strongest research output.

Mahikeng Campus (North West province) emphasizes law, education, humanities, and agriculture, renowned for its law faculty and teacher training programs. Vanderbijlpark Campus (Vaal Triangle, Gauteng) focuses on economic and management sciences including business, accounting, finance, and commerce programs.

Financial Aid & NSFAS Funding

North-West University is NSFAS-eligible, meaning qualifying South African students can access government funding. Who Qualifies: SASSA grant recipients, persons with combined household income not exceeding R350,000 per annum, or persons with disabilities with household income not exceeding R600,000 per year.

NSFAS Covers: Tuition and registration fees, accommodation allowances, transport and meal subsidies, books and learning materials, and other essential living expenses.
