Whether you are living with friends or strangers, casual household issues can become greater without some organisation!

Flatshare: a Blessing and a Curse

Living in a shared flat can be the best parts of your life. It’s just you and your mates, all left up to your own devices. While it is all fun and games, some reality needs to be dealt with. Living with people other than your family can be an adjustment to different habits, lifestyles, and priorities. It is important to keep an open line of communication to combat friction between the residents.

If you’ve just moved in, or are about to move in with a flatmate, check out these awesome blogs:

You’ll have to do your own dishes, your own laundry, keeping your accommodation in a habitable state (we hope), buying groceries, cooking your own food and learning how to budget

Can't Adult - Flatmate Harmony

This is where the tension with your flatmate can easily arise – s/he left the kitchen in a state, drank all the milk and still hasn’t paid you back for last week’s pizza… how are you going to sort this out?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Solution?  Download Apps

We are part of a tech generation.  Why not use an app or two or three to help you out?  We’ve picked out the Top 3 Apps for Flatmate Harmony!

1. OurGroceries

OurGroceries is available on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store… and it is completely free to download!

The app does offer an in-app purchase and this is to remove all ads from the app, it’ll cost you R80. Rather buy a pizza! 😉 The app works just fine with the ads.

The app is comprised of two essential components: the ‘Shopping List’ tab and the ‘Recipes’ tab.

Shopping List

You’ve just come home from varsity, you’re tired, it’s a hot day… you feel like an ice-cold glass of milk! Could there be anything more frustrating than to open the fridge and realise that your flatmate has finished the milk AND not replaced it? We think not. This is where the ‘Shopping List’ tab becomes so useful! You are able to go onto the OurGroceries app and under ‘Shopping List’, you can scroll through a list of plenty of options and add whatever has been finished and… wait for it… instantaneously have it emailed or texted to your flatmate! That way, when you get home from a long, hot and stressful day at Varsity, your ice-cold milk will be in the fridge!

Recipes

The ‘Recipes’ tab is there to help prompt and inspire you and your flatmate to prepare and cook a family meal together. Under the Recipes tab, you can easily record recipes – and the necessary ingredients for these recipes – and keep them there for future use. Imagine going home for the weekend and getting your mom or dad to upload a heap of recipes onto the app for you? You will be able to instantly share them with your flatmate and the two of you won’t be left scratching your heads every time y’all need to cook dinner![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

2. Splitwise

Cha-ching! You’ve just paid for tonight’s pizza and your flatmate is going to
totally pay you back.

One of the most awkward conversations is having to repeatedly ask your flatmate or friend to pay you back for something that you bought and… they promised they’d pay you back for!

Luckily for you, those awkward conversations are soon to be a thing of the past! Yes – we’re being serious!!

This awesome app called ‘Splitwise’ was literally designed for just these moments!

It’s super simple and kind of fun to use too! All you do is sign up:

  • Provide your email address
  • Cell number
  • Create a password
  • And you’re ready to reclaim your fortunes!

Splitwise allows you to add a payment to the app, and this is how it works:

  1. You add who owes you money and their cellphone number/email address
  2. You add for what they owe you money and
  3. You specify how much money they owe you

Splitwise will then keep a record of this money owed to you AND email or text the person to let them know how much they owe you, what it was for and when it was bought – pretty cool right?

Splitwise is available for free download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and is the new app that’ll slow down the hemorrhaging of your bank account during your time at University![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

3. OurHome – Chores and Rewards

OurHome is an app that is ideally designed for family use and is aimed at younger children. OurHome has ‘rewards’ as a way to incentivise children to do their chores. It is still very useful for students staying in digs and this is why:

OurHome allows you to create profiles for yourself and whomever else you are staying with.

Once you have created your profile, you can allocate different ‘tasks’ (garden, kitchen, bathroom, groceries) to the different profiles. This way, the house should never get super untidy, the garden out of hand and there should always be food in the cupboards!

OurHome is great as it allows you to update how much progress you have made and this way you can see how much your flatmate has done… and whether or not you are justified in calling them out on the state of the kitchen!

Download it now on IOS or Android![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

You’ll soon learn how.[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row]
