What does a BEd degree look like?
A Bachelor of Education (BEd) is a four year professional degree that prepares you to work as a teacher. You can choose to pursue a BEd in Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase or Senior/FET Phase teaching, depending on what age group appeals to you most.ย
Entry Requirements:
- NSC with a Bachelorโs Degree Pass
- Pass at level 4 (50-59%) in your language of instruction and home or first additional language – English, Afrikaans, Setswana or Sesotho (south)
- Minimum APS Score of 24
- Life Orientation is not included in this calculation
- Compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL) form
- Who is this qualification for?
This degree is for people who are interested in working with learners from grade 1 to grade 3 and who want to learn how to use disciplinary, pedagogical and practical learning and assessment strategies.
- Curriculum
During your four years studying this degree, you will study generic and specialist modules. This course focuses on language, mathematics and life skills. By the end of this qualification you should be able to teach all three of these subjects at the foundation phase level. You will develop the ability to demonstrate skills that are communicative, numerical and technological in such a way that they facilitate your own learning.
- Who is this qualification for?
This degree is for people who are interested in working with learners from grade 7 to grade 12 and who are interested in working with teenagers and teaching certain subjects at this level.
- Curriculum
While you are pursuing this degree you are expected to master certain outcomes. You will have to learn how to integrate knowledge and skills that you obtain within your specialities. You are able to specialise in Education Movement Sciences,ย Businessย Management Studies, Accounting, Education Applied Computer Technology and Education Engineer Graphics and Design.
Studying a BEd with Open Learning Group (OLG)
If you choose to study a BEd with OLG, you enroll for the degree at the North-West University (NWU), through its unit for Open Distance Learning. OLG then providesย administrative and logistical support for this programme. There are also 40 different learning centres with available Wi-Fi, around South Africa that students can visit. Both of the programmes mentioned are offered electronically through distance learning.and are only offered in English. Students are expected to attend compulsory contact sessions once a week (at a listed study centre) and must have basic computer literacy as well as a computer with access to the internet.
OLG makes it possible to study education in a more affordable and convenient way, without having to move all the way to Potchefstroom or Mafikeng to receive certified qualifications from NWU.
