Develop yourself while binge watching TV shows? Is this possible? Absolutely! Many TV teach us life lessons through the characters. These life lessons teach us about friendship, relationships, how to deal with failure and challenges – amongst many others. While you are snuggled up on the couch with remote in hand, make sure you watch a few of these TV shows and perhaps learn a few of these important life lessons.

1. Keep Trying: The Office

The Office is both hilarious and relatable. It is a satirical documentary style series which follows the lives of typical office workers, their relationships and their daily struggles. The Office teaches us that work relationships are difficult and can often cause tension, however it is important to manage work-related (or school related) conflicts carefully and sensitively. The Office also teaches us, that like Michael Scott (Steve Carell), things don’t always go according to plan, so keep your chin up and try anyway! Like his famous line says: “you just gots to get your freak on”.

2. Be Yourself – Unashamedly: New Girl

New Girl is a hilarious comedy series about a group of roommates: Nick, Schmidt, Winston and the new girl: Jess (Zoe Deschanel). Jess is an awkward and adorable teacher who reminds us to embrace our quirks, no matter how strange they might seem. Don’t hide the awkward parts of yourself because you’re afraid. Embrace them and you’ll learn that people will love your quirks. By embracing your true self, you inadvertently tell the people around you that you will accept their quirks too. If you love to knit, join a knitting club and do your thing! Jess, Nick, Schmidt and Winston remind us that we are all a bit weird and this is what makes life and friendship exciting.

3. Don’t Take Anyone for Granted: Greys Anatomy

Greys Anatomy is a TV drama about doctors, interns and patients in a hospital. Narrated by Meredith Grey, the TV show is famous for being a major tearjerker, get your tissues ready. Each episode generally centers around a life-lesson, so it can be hard to pin down just one. However, perhaps the most important lesson to be learnt from Greys Anatomy is that life is short. Appreciate the people who are important to you and don’t take them for granted. Meredith Grey teaches us that life can throw some major curveballs and you never know when your life will change. 4. Try Turning It Off and On Again: The IT Crowd

This TV series is about a group of unusual technical support workers at a large corporation. The famous line, “have you tried turning it off and on again?” is a life lesson in itself. Many problems could be solved by simply turning something off and on again. Sure, this advice works well with technology but it can also apply to a relationship argument or any number of things. For example, sometimes it is wiser to take a breather, get some perspective and then re-approach the situation from a different perspective.

5. The World is a Weird and Wonderful Place: Planet Earth

Planet Earth is narrated by David Attenborough, it is 11 episodes long and incredible – even if you’re not a ‘nature documentary’ type of person. The original series took over 5 years to film. Each 50 minute episode features a global overview of a different biome or habitat on Earth (Polar, Mountain, Cave, Desert, Plains, Fresh Water, Seas, Ocean, Forest), followed by a ten-minute featurette which takes a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of filming the episode. Planet Earth reminds us how lucky we are to be surrounded by so many beautiful things. It can be so easy to get caught up in school, university and life, that we forget to take a look around and acknowledge how incredible the world around us is.
