So you’ve decided what to study, and you’ve decided where you want to study. Now it’s time to figure out how to actually fund it. We all know that finding funding for your tertiary studies can be a stressful process, as bursaries and scholarships can be hard to come by- especially this late in the game. Luckily, there are still a few funding opportunities available across a variety of fields.
SEDISA Trust Bursary South Africa
Application close: 15th February 2019
The SEDISA Trust aims to provide opportunities to previously disadvantaged black females from South Africa with strong academic drive.
The fields of study that the bursary covers include:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Quantity Surveying
- A variety of similar fields
This bursary scheme covers the following:
- Tuition fees
- Textbooks
- Accomodation

Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) Bursary
Applications close: 31 January 2019
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) is the largest nurses’ trade union in South Africa. The DENOSA bursaries cover the following:
- Bridging courses and short courses
- Community nursing science
- Community health nursing, psychiatric nursing and geriatric nursing
- Postgraduate studies (at a University or Technikon)
- Clinical Master’s degree programme
The bursaries do not, however, always cover the full cost of tuition so recipients may be required to make up the difference. Students who are awarded bursaries are able to re-apply for funding each year and will be funding depending on their academic performance.

KwaZulu-Natal Dept of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) Bursary

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) aims to promote economic development and transformation in South Africa. THE EDTEA Bursary awards funding to matric students who wish to study Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Pretoria or Wits University.
This bursary covers the following expenses:
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed textbooks
- Accommodation
- Food allowance
- General allowance

Fundi Student Loans
Application closing date: N/A
A student loan is a great option to consider if you haven’t managed to qualify for a bursary or a scholarship. The upside of covering you study costs with a loan is that you are able to apply for a loan at any point in the year. Another benefit of a student loan is that you are not obligated to any kind of service contract. A student loan could potentially cover everything from tuition, books and accommodation to registration fees and outstanding balances.
Three things to consider when applying for a loan to fund your studies are:
- Are you are prepared to incur some debt?
- How do you plan on paying off this debt in the future?
- Do you have someone to stand surety* for you?

It is important to note that preference is given to student who are either already enrolled in, or have been accepted into a recognised and accredited institution.

Shoprite Bursary
Applications close: 31st January 2019
Africa’s biggest food retailer, the Shoprite Group, are looking to fund passionate and dynamic students who wish to grow and learn within the company. These bursaries are open to South African matrics who have achieved a 70% average, or to students who are currently studying in one of the required fields of study.
Bursaries are available for the following fields:
- Accounting (CA Stream)
- Information Technology
- Logistics
- Retail Management/ Hospitality Management
This bursary covers:
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed textbooks
- Accommodation
It is important to note that this bursary includes a work-back requirement. This means that recipients of the bursary will be required to work for Shoprite for the same amount of time that they were covered by the bursary.

KPMG Bursaries
Application close: Applications are open all year round
KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler) is an international financial services company that offers predominantly financial audit, tax and advisory services. KPMG offers two bursary opportunities for students intending to study towards becoming a SAICA accredited Chartered Accountant.
- Merit Bursary which is based purely on academic results.
- Merit Bursary with Financial Needs which is based on academic results as well as financial need.
It is important to note that this bursary scheme requires that the recipients participate in a 3 year training contract at the company following graduation.
