How to do Grade 10 like a Pro

by Macharia Mahinda

Grade 10 is here!  So you’ve finally chosen your subjects and now find yourself staring down the barrel of the final three years of school. Daunting? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

Grade 10 is the beginning of the senior phase of high school.  It is a big step up from Grade 9 that comes with its challenges as well as its privileges, such as getting some respect👆

Grade 10 unpacked

Grade 10 can be a very stressful adjustment from the junior phase of high school. For starters, you’ll be focusing on fewer subjects but learning more content. You are also entering the senior group in high school. Many learners stress about not doing well at first in their chosen subjects and fear that this will have an impact on their career path

Let’s look at what Grade 10 entails:

         First Term:

  • Here you will gain a broad understanding of the subjects that you have chosen, build on themes from previous years and begin to lay the foundation for Matric. Get ready for a term filled with tests and assignments!📚

    Second Term:

  • The pace will begin to pick up in the second term. Be prepared to learn a lot but make sure that you enjoy it. Exam time! 📝

    Third Term:

  • The third term is generally a time of consolidation. You will learn the last few themes in your respective subjects and then begin to consolidate everything in preparation for fourth term exams. Also, remember that Grade 10 is the best time to change your subjects if they are not working for you. ⚖

    Fourth Term:

  • Exams exams exams! Manage your time well, study hard and ask loads of questions! By the end of the fourth term, you should have a good understanding of whether or not you are enjoying your chosen subjects. 💡

    Holidays:

  • A great thing to do during your June or December holidays is to job shadow. This will give you a great understanding of what the industry that you are interested in is actually like. We would advise job shadowing during the June holidays as most companies will be closing for the year during December.  Also remember to get in some rest and relaxation – the holidays is the best time to refuel. 🎉

Find some balance in Grade 10

Maintaining a sense of balance is important in a variety of aspects of life. In school, especially Grade 10, it is imperative that you find and keep a balance!

Schoolwork can be, and often is, very time consuming, draining and stressful. It has been proven that when people work until they drop, they lose motivation, focus, and passion. So, what can you do to ensure that you keep a balance? And what type of balance?

You should ensure that you are participating in an extra-curricular activity of sorts. Be this sport, debating, hiking or running – your extra-curricular activities will give you the opportunity to put your schoolwork aside and destress. Extra-curricular activities are also a great way to meet new people! Don’t believe us? Give it a try!

Having a life outside of school is proven to increase the success of learners rather than detract from it… if there is a balance, of course!

Carpe Diem

To repeat the age-old saying: “High school will be over before you know it!”. Our advice to you is to make the most of every week, every term and every year. Grade 10 comes with an increase in work but you will also have more ‘privileges’ in the form of increasing respect and relationships with older learners and teachers. This is a great time to make new friends, find new interests which make you smile and explore!  Grade 10 marks the beginning of the end of high school – there is no better time to make the most of your school days.
